Minicraft GBA – Notch’s Own Minecraft Demake, Ported to Game Boy Advance by vulcalien
In 2011, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson entered Ludum Dare 22 — a 48-hour game jam — and made a 2D top-down demake of his own game from scratch over a single weekend. He called it Minicraft, released it for free, and it became an instant curiosity: a bite-sized distillation of Minecraft’s core survival loop — gathering resources, crafting tools and weapons, descending underground, and ultimately confronting the Air Wizard boss — stripped to its essentials and playable in a single sitting.
This GBA port by vulcalien brings Minicraft to Nintendo’s handheld natively, faithfully recreating the original jam game in a form built for cartridge play. The top-down perspective, crafting system, resource gathering, and dungeon descent are all intact, running on GBA hardware with the responsive feel the system’s controls are well suited to.
It’s a uniquely layered piece of gaming history: a demake of one of the best-selling games ever made, built by its original creator in 48 hours, now playable on a Game Boy Advance cartridge. For Minecraft fans, game jam enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates the elegance of a game stripped down to its purest form, Minicraft GBA is a genuinely special addition to any collection.
The developer vulcalien’s itch.io page offers a free browser version and download if you’d like to support their work directly before purchasing the physical cartridge.
