Metroid: Oil Spill (v1.5) – The Non-Linear Metroid Fusion Hack with a Brand New World
Metroid Fusion is a masterpiece of atmosphere and tension — but linearity was always its compromise. Metroid: Oil Spill by Spedimus sets out to answer the question of what Fusion could feel like with the freedom of a more open world, and it does so with a story and setting entirely its own.
Samus responds to an emergency aboard a suddenly abandoned oil freighter that’s leaking an unknown substance into the surrounding environment. The mission: deploy the ship’s auto repair drones from the inside and contain the disaster before it devastates local wildlife. What she finds inside is anything but routine.
The hack spans 5 areas spread across the interior and exterior of the freighter, with a non-linear structure that lets players approach sections in their own order — a genuine departure from Fusion’s famously directed pacing. New palettes and tilesets give the freighter its own visual identity throughout, and the platforming has been tuned to be more demanding than the base game, rewarding precision and patience.
The only Fusion-based hack in the store’s Metroid lineup, and the one to reach for if non-linear GBA Metroid is what you’re after.
