Doom GBA PC Total Conversion v1.7 – The Entire Engine Replaced, Not Just the Assets
The official GBA port of Doom was built on the Jaguar Doom engine — a simplified, cut-down version of the game designed for early 1990s console hardware, complete with truncated maps, reduced framerate, censored graphics, and music that played on the wrong levels. Kippykip’s PC Total Conversion v1.7 doesn’t just fix the visuals. It throws out the Jaguar engine entirely and replaces it with a homebrew GBA port of PrBoom by doomhack — a proper PC Doom engine running on Nintendo’s handheld.
The difference is substantial. The full, non-simplified PC maps are restored, playing exactly as id Software designed them. The framerate improves noticeably over the original GBA release. Sound quality is significantly higher. And the music now plays on the correct levels — a detail that sounds minor until you’ve heard the GBA original shuffle its tracks around. All of this arrives alongside the full uncensored PC graphics: the blood, the correct enemy sprites, the complete visual identity of the 1993 original.
The HUD has been updated to match the one from the Doom II PC Conversion pack, giving both versions a consistent look for anyone who picks up the pair. The one caveat worth noting is that this homebrew port does not include multiplayer support.
