Wario Land 4 is one of the GBA’s finest platformers — tight level design, inventive transformations, and a surreal aesthetic that holds up better than almost anything on the system. Parallel World by Beco is a complete ROM hack released on the game’s 20th anniversary in 2021 that takes every level and boss from the original and remixes them from the ground up, drawing on the DNA of the original concepts while incorporating ideas and elements from across the broader Wario game catalogue.
Every stage has been redesigned while retaining the feel of its source — familiar enough to reward series veterans, different enough to surprise them at every turn. All three difficulty modes are available (Normal, Hard, and the gruelling S-Hard), so the hack scales to whatever punishment level you’re ready for. A new diamond counter has been added to each level, giving completionists a fresh collectible target to chase on top of the existing treasure and CD objectives.
The soundtrack draws on a mix of custom tracks and music sourced from other games’ OSTs, sitting alongside the original Wario Land 4 CD music to create a playlist that feels both familiar and distinctly its own.
