Before Pokémon Diamond was a real game, it was a lie — a label slapped onto bootleg cartridges of Keitai Denjuu Telefang to trick Western buyers in the early 2000s. Those bootlegs were terrible. The actual game underneath them? A genuinely excellent Game Boy Color RPG that deserved far better.
Released in Japan in 2000, Telefang is a monster-befriending RPG with a unique twist: instead of catching creatures in battles, you collect their phone numbers. Denjuu — sentient monsters with their own personalities — are called into combat via cell phone, and once defeated they’ll text you, building relationships over the course of the adventure. It’s charming, funny, and built around Japan’s Keitai mobile culture in a way nothing else quite captures. The creature designs by Saiko Takaki are inspired, and the soundtrack by Kinuyo Yamashita (Castlevania, Mega Man) is genuinely excellent.
After 16 years of work, the Telefang.net translation team released a complete English patch covering both Power and Speed versions. This cartridge ships with the latest Speed Version beta (v160), and the translation is comprehensive: all text fully localised, title screen voiceover translated, bug fixes from the original game, longer nicknames, improved name entry, no-RTC mode for compatibility, restored Super Game Boy borders with full colour support, and multiple variable-width fonts with automatic text narrowing.
