Sonic 6 – The Unlicensed 1998 Game Boy Bootleg Where Sonic Replaced Speedy Gonzales
Someone in 1998 looked at Speedy Gonzales for Game Boy and had a simple observation: Speedy runs fast, Sonic runs fast, the games play similarly — close enough. The result is Sonic 6, an unlicensed pirate release credited to “Sonic World” that swaps every sprite and reference to Speedy Gonzales out in favour of Sonic the Hedgehog, producing a bootleg platformer that is simultaneously brazen, charming, and surprisingly playable.
The hack goes beyond a simple sprite swap — the level order is changed too, opening with “Forest Zone” rather than the original game’s “Ice Zone.” The password system from Speedy Gonzales carries over intact, giving the game more structure than most bootlegs of the era. Sonic World are believed to be the same group responsible for the infamous unlicensed Sonic the Hedgehog port on Super Nintendo, making this a notable piece of bootleg Sonic history.
For collectors of unlicensed Game Boy titles, pirate Sonic games, or early 90s bootleg curiosities, Sonic 6 is a genuinely interesting artefact — a game that was never supposed to exist, running on hardware it was never licensed for, and working better than it has any right to.
