Sonic 3D Blast 5 – Makon Soft’s Infamously Broken Sonic Game, Now on a Real Cartridge
Makon Soft occupy a unique corner of Game Boy bootleg history. Their unlicensed platformers — built on a shared engine, decorated with borrowed sprites, and shipped with magnificent indifference to quality control — have achieved genuine internet fame. Sonic 3D Blast 5 is arguably their most notorious title, a late-1990s Sonic platformer that commits to the bit while breaking most of the rules.
Sonic can jump (B button), build speed into a run, and spin dash (Down + B) — though the spin dash won’t damage enemies on contact. The invincibility powerup protects Sonic but doesn’t change the music, making it impossible to tell when it expires. Lost rings cannot be recovered after taking a hit. There are no boss fights. Enemies from Sonic 1 and Sonic 3 make appearances, reduced from their original AI patterns to simply moving back and forth.
The five levels pull from across Sonic’s history — a Green Hill-style opener, a Flying Battery Zone stage complete with robotic mice, something resembling Spring Yard or Carnival Night, a desert level widely considered the game’s hardest due to persistent glitches and a gap that requires launching off a Buzz Bomber enemy to cross, and a Marble Garden Zone finale.
A staple of the Makon Soft canon and a must-have for collectors of unlicensed GB history.
