Sea Boy GBA Prototype – A Cancelled Aquatic Puzzle Game Preserved by Forest of Illusion
Sea Boy is a cancelled Game Boy Advance puzzle game developed by Rival Dreams Inc. that never made it to retail shelves. Built around a refreshingly gentle concept — a boy rescuing fish and aquatic creatures by moving them between bodies of water using physics-based puzzles — the game was designed as a deliberate departure from the action-heavy titles dominating the GBA library at the time. A complete prototype was preserved and released to the public in 2022 by Forest of Illusion, the renowned video game preservation group responsible for rescuing dozens of lost and unreleased titles from obscurity.
The prototype gives a clear picture of what Sea Boy was shaping up to be: a thoughtful, physics-driven puzzle game with a distinct aquatic identity and a target audience broader than most GBA releases of its era. It’s a genuine what-if — a polished enough build to show real promise, and a fascinating window into the kind of game that rarely survives the development process intact.
For collectors of preserved and unreleased software, Sea Boy sits comfortably alongside the store’s other prototype releases. It’s one of the few cancelled GBA games with a confirmed preservation provenance, and playing it on cartridge is as close as it gets to the version that might have lined store shelves in another timeline.
