Released in 2003, Pocket Monster Carbuncle is a full-fledged strategy RPG for Game Boy Color featuring Pokémon-inspired characters, an overworld map, turn-based battles, evolution mechanics, and over 70 monsters to recruit — all wrapped in the gloriously chaotic charm only an unlicensed Taiwanese game can deliver.

You start as Pichu (here called “Piku”), evolving into Pikachu and eventually Raichu, recruiting allies along the way with wonderfully mistranslated names like “Qutstading Nuntortoise” (Squirtle), “Strongbear” (Feraligatr), and “Fat D” (Jigglypuff). A true artifact of early 2000s bootleg gaming culture — hilarious, surprisingly deep, and completely one of a kind.
