Metal Slug GBC – The Unlicensed Port That’s Actually Worth Playing
This is the same cartridge as the infamous Terrifying 911 — the same engine, the same levels, the same game — with one significant difference: all references to the September 11 attacks have been removed. What’s left is a surprisingly decent unlicensed port of Metal Slug 1 for the Neo Geo, running on Game Boy Color hardware.
And genuinely: it holds up. The graphics are solid for a GBC bootleg, working within the hardware’s limitations more competently than most unlicensed titles manage. All the bosses are present, though easier than their arcade counterparts. Missions 4 and 5 swap order from the original, but otherwise the structure follows Metal Slug 1 faithfully. A jumps, B shoots. Run right, blast everything.
For collectors who want the complete picture of this particular corner of GBC bootleg history, owning both this and Terrifying 911 documents the full story of the cartridge’s evolution. For everyone else who just wants to play an unlicensed Metal Slug on actual Game Boy Color hardware — this is the one to get.
A rare find and a legitimately playable piece of bootleg GBC history.
