Metal Slug 3 by Sintax – The Unlicensed GBC Platformer That Spawned a Bootleg Engine
SNK’s Metal Slug series is synonymous with the Neo Geo — explosive run-and-gun action with hand-drawn animation and relentless arcade energy. Sintax looked at all of that and built their own version for Game Boy Color, calling it Metal Slug: Yue Nan Zhan Yi 3 (越南戰役3). It arrived around 2002–2003, and it was functional enough that Sintax reused its engine for at least two more unlicensed GBC games — their Metroid bootleg and their James Bond title.
That’s the quiet legacy of this cartridge: it wasn’t just a one-off knockoff, it was the foundation of a small Sintax platform.
You play as Fio Germi through 7 stages of side-scrolling action. Explore levels, eliminate enemies, find the exit, collect weapons and health along the way. Sprites are adapted from the official Metal Slug games on Neo Geo Pocket. The soundtrack, in fine Sintax tradition, is lifted wholesale from the licensed GBC version of Lemmings. The game ends with a final boss and a screen reading simply: “The End.”
