Matel Gear II – Sintax’s Unlicensed Answer to Metal Gear, Reimagined as a Beat-’em-Up RPG
Konami’s Metal Gear series built its reputation on stealth, tension, and tactical espionage. Sintax looked at all that and thought: what if it was a beat-’em-up? The result is Matel Gear II (合金裝備II), a 2003 unlicensed GBC game that borrows Snake, Gray Fox, Meryl, and Master Miller — here renamed “Black Valcano” — and drops them into an entirely different genre from the one they’re known for.
What emerges is a surprisingly substantial game for a bootleg. There are four fully distinct playable characters, each with their own combat stats, movement feel, and button combo animations. There’s an RPG levelling system — slow, but present. There are save files, an overworld map, a Colonel who briefs you on objectives, and Mei Ling prompting you to save your game. The bones of the Metal Gear experience are all here, reassembled into something thoroughly Sintax.
