Commander Keen 5: The Armageddon Machine – id Software’s 1991 DOS Classic Ported to GBA
Before Doom, before Quake, id Software made Commander Keen — and episode 5, The Armageddon Machine, is where the series reached its peak. Eight-year-old genius Billy “Commander Keen” Blaze has tracked the alien Shikadi to their ship, the Omegamatic, a galaxy-destroying weapon orbiting in deep space. To stop it, he must fight through its corridors, disable four protective machines, and reach the core. Armed with a raygun that stuns enemies and a pogo stick that launches him to improbable heights, Keen picks his way through a labyrinth of robots, deadly hazards, locked doors, and hidden Vitalin stashes — the lifeblood currency of the Keen universe.
The Omegamatic is navigated via a top-down overhead map between levels, giving the game a structure that feels surprisingly modern for a 1991 DOS platformer — more open and player-directed than the linear march of most games of its era. Each level either demands a run to the exit or requires finding and destroying a specific machine, keeping objectives varied throughout.
This GBA port by john314thegeekygenius brings the full Armageddon Machine experience to Nintendo’s handheld with no content removed. If you’ve picked up Commander Keen 4 from the store, this is the direct follow-up — the concluding chapter of the Goodbye, Galaxy duology, and the stronger of the two episodes.
