Celeste became one of the most celebrated indie games of its generation — a precision platformer built around wall jumps, air dashes and a story about self-belief that resonated with millions of players worldwide. This is Celeste on original Game Boy hardware, and the technical achievement behind it is remarkable.
Released in July 2026 by joshop, this Game Boy port of Celeste Classic was built entirely from scratch — approximately 8,000 lines of SM83 assembly code, compiling to just 29.9KB of ROM and 933 bytes of RAM, all fitting within the strict constraints of the original 1989 hardware. Since the physics engine had to be completely rewritten from the ground up to run on the Game Boy’s processor, it isn’t 100% identical to the PICO-8 original — but it contains all the levels and all the music, plays with precision and feel that reviewers describe as “very crisp”, and runs on real original DMG Game Boy hardware as well as Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance in backwards compatibility mode. A colour “DX” version for Game Boy Color is planned for a future update.
