2003 Crash II Advance – The Sintax Bootleg That Borrowed From Everyone and Answered to No One
In 2003, Chinese publisher Sintax released a Crash Bandicoot game for Game Boy Color. Crash Bandicoot had never had a GBC game. Sintax didn’t let that stop them.
2003 Crash II Advance (2003古惑狼II) is an unlicensed side-scrolling platformer that takes loose inspiration from Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure on GBA while building something entirely its own — a six-stage platformer where Crash searches for blue gems, avoids bottomless pits with questionable collision detection, and faces two boss battles along the way. One boss is a mermaid lifted directly from a Famicom game. The music comes from a Game Boy monster-collection title. Several enemy sprites arrived from Felix the Cat on NES.
The result is one of the most entertainingly unhinged games in the entire Sintax catalogue — a patchwork platformer assembled from borrowed assets, original ideas, and the confidence that only comes from operating entirely outside the rules.
Gameplay basics: A jumps, B spins or uses a weapon, Down + A performs a long jump. One hit kills Crash in regular stages; bosses are more forgiving. Crates scatter each level — yellow ones hold Wumpa fruit, green ones have a fuse, pink ones detonate on contact. Two save slots. Six stages. Leaps of faith required.
A collector’s staple and a window into the wildest era of unlicensed GBC publishing.
