Wario Land 1 DX – The Original Wario Adventure, Now Playing in Color
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 launched in 1994 and immediately proved that the rotund villain deserved his own series. Rather than speed and jumping precision, Wario brought raw power — shoulder-charging through enemies, grabbing and throwing them, and hunting treasure across a sprawling pirate-themed world. It was a genuinely fresh take on the Game Boy platformer, and it launched one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises. It just happened to ship entirely in monochrome.
Wario Land 1 DX by korxo (v1.2) gives it a color upgrade, bringing GBC palettes to Wario’s stages and enemies throughout the adventure. It’s a community colorization — honest and earnest in its ambition — and while it sits in different territory from some of the more polished DX hacks, it remains a clear improvement over playing the original in grey.
Worth noting: this hack runs exclusively on Game Boy Color or GBA hardware. It will not boot on an original DMG Game Boy.
