Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is widely considered the pinnacle of the original Game Boy’s platformer library. Six distinct worlds, inventive stage themes — a Space Zone, a Pumpkin Zone, a Macro Zone — and the first appearance of Wario as a villain. It was a showcase of what the hardware could do. The one thing it couldn’t do was color.
Super Mario Land 2 DX by toruzz (v1.81) is the hack the community points to when explaining what a great colorization looks like. Developed in the spirit of Nintendo’s own Link’s Awakening DX upgrade, it adds full GBC color to every world, enemy, and power-up — and then goes further with two features Nintendo never provided.
