Super Mario Land 1 DX – Where Mario’s Game Boy Story Began, Reimagined in Full Color
Super Mario Land was the game that launched the Game Boy in 1989 — a globe-trotting adventure through Sarasaland, across Egypt, China, a coral reef, and a distant world inspired by Easter Island, rescuing Princess Daisy from the alien Tatanga. It was unlike any Mario game before or since: strange, compact, wildly inventive, and entirely hand-crafted for a tiny screen in four shades of grey.
Super Mario Land 1 DX by toruzz (v2.0) doesn’t just add color — it gives the game a comprehensive visual overhaul that brings it in line with modern GBC aesthetics. Graphics have been updated and refreshed throughout, making this feel less like a colorized port and more like a definitive edition that could have shipped alongside Link’s Awakening DX in 1998.
And like its companion hack Super Mario Land 2 DX, it adds something Nintendo never did: Luigi is fully playable, with his own distinct sprite and feel.
