Description:

Matel Gear II (合金裝備II) is an unlicensed video game for the Game Boy Color developed and published by Sintax. The game was likely released some time in 2003 based on the ID printed on the boxes for the Chinese releases (200313519). Matel Gear II rips off the popular Metal Gear video game series, though this game’s beat-’em-up style of gameplay greatly differs from the stealth that the Metal Gear game series typically offered. This game was released in both Chinese and English, with the former being released in both Taiwan and mainland China, and the latter only known to have been released in parts of Asia.

Overview

There are a total of four different playable characters to choose from in the game: Solid Snake (索利德·斯内克), who is named “S.Solid” in the English version, Gray Fox (法蘭克·灰狐), named “F.Fox” in the English version, Meryl Silverburgh, named “Miliya” in the English version, and Master Miller, who is named “Black Valcano” in the English version, which is a misspelled translation of his name in the Chinese version, 黑火山 (“Black Volcano”). Every character has their advantages and disadvantages just as they all have their strengths and weaknesses during gameplay. For example, there is Gray Fox’s ability to attack at quick speeds, or Miller’s high strength in combat.

After selecting any of the four characters, the player is given a choice to listen to the next screen of communication that says: “Want to receive information?” If ‘Yes’ is chosen, the Colonel will explaining the objectives to the player’s chosen character. If ‘No’ is chosen, the player will be taken to an overworld map.

After talking with the Colonel, the player will be taken to an overworld map with their character of choice. From here, there are two areas to enter and a guard that seems to be keeping his post regardless of action. The player can interact with the guard by going next to him and pressing B, which will bring up a dialogue box. On a new game, this reads (translated from the Chinese version): “I am sorry! If you don’t find the map, you cannot go ahead!” The two areas in the first level are as follows: one from the top left corner of the screen and another at the bottom right corner of the screen. The area at the bottom right shows a heliport logo, while the other area appears to be an underground facility. When the player enters an area, they are greeted by Mei Ling with the text box reading a question that says (translated): “Are you sure you want to record the game?” Selecting yes will write the player’s current game data over one of the two save files allowed. Selecting no will take the player to their chosen area.

Despite the Metal Gear series mainly (or at the time of the game’s release, exclusively) being comprised of stealth action games, Matel Gear II is a beat em’ up game. The game also features an RPG element where you can gain enough experience points to level up your selected character. The process can take a very long time and makes little difference in conclusion. While the game is paused, it will show more statistics than what is shown on the main game screen. These include the name of the character, their lives, level, experience, and combat stats such as strength and agility. While fighting enemies, the player can perform 3 button input combos such as B, B, B, Down, Down, B, Down, Up, B, and Down, Right, B. This applies for all characters, but differ in animations. The game does have other levels and attributes, however. In total, this game can take up to about 4 hours to complete.
