The spice must flow — even on Game Boy Advance. Dune: Ornithopter Assault is a cancelled 3D cockpit shooter developed by Soft Brigade and slated for publication by Cryo Interactive, set in Frank Herbert’s iconic science fiction universe. Development ran from 2001 until summer 2002, when Cryo’s financial difficulties forced the project to be shelved just before Nintendo submission — despite the game being, by all accounts, essentially finished. Every mission is completable from start to finish.
Played entirely from the cockpit of an ornithopter, the game pushes the GBA hardware to deliver a genuinely three-dimensional view of Arrakis. Over 20 distinct missions send you across the desert planet with varied objectives: reconnaissance, escort duties, base defence, destroying enemy troops and structures, capturing vehicles, and harvesting spice and water. Five solo and multiplayer modes — including joint campaign and deathmatch via GBA link cable — give the prototype a scope that few completed GBA games matched, let alone unreleased ones.
It holds the distinction of being the first Dune adaptation ever released on a handheld console, and with Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptations bringing Herbert’s universe back to mainstream attention, the timing to finally play this long-lost piece of Dune gaming history on actual hardware has never been better. The ROM was preserved and released publicly, and this custom cartridge puts it on a physical GBA cart where it always belonged.
